Pavilion Greenhouse , Houma, Louisiana

Set within the private grounds of a distinguished family estate in Houma, this bespoke greenhouse pavilion reinterprets the traditional conservatory as both a cultivated environment and a refined social retreat. Positioned at the edge of a small lake, the structure is carefully oriented to engage expansive water views while remaining intimately connected to the surrounding landscape.

The project was shaped in close collaboration with the homeowners, whose appreciation for the outdoors and for authentic, uncontrived experiences informed every aspect of the design. In particular, the brief reflected a desire to live closely with nature—where planting, light, seasonal change, and social life could coexist in a single, elegant setting.

The architecture is defined by a restrained palette of glass, steel, timber, and stone. A light steel and timber framework supports a generous glazed envelope, allowing daylight to flood the interior throughout the day and creating a seamless visual connection between inside and out. Operable timber screens temper sunlight and provide privacy, while establishing a rhythmic façade that responds sensitively to the Southern climate.

Internally, the greenhouse functions as a multi-purpose social space. Lush planting is integrated into the architecture itself, softening the structure and reinforcing the experience of inhabiting a garden rather than merely observing one. Gathering areas are arranged around a central hearth, offering places for dining, conversation, and quiet retreat, all with uninterrupted views across the water.

Stone floors and finely detailed joinery introduce a sense of permanence and craft, grounding the lightness of the glazed structure. The result is a space that feels both cultivated and relaxed—an environment that reflects the owners’ refined sensibility, their generosity as hosts, and a deep respect for nature as a setting for meaningful human connection.
